Option for a lump-sum withdrawal available from January 1, 2029
The Dutch Senate has approved the lump-sum withdrawal revision act (Herziening bedrag ineens). As a result, from January 1, 2029, you will have the option to withdraw up to 10% of your pension as a one-time payment.
How does it work?
A lump-sum withdrawal is an option available when you start receiving your pension. It means that up to 10% of your retirement pension can be paid out to you in one single payment. You may also choose a lower percentage.
The remainder of your pension will be paid to you as a monthly pension benefit. However, if you choose a lump-sum withdrawal, your monthly pension payments will be lower than if you do not make use of this option.
Good to know
You must retain at least €632.62 per year (2026 amount) in pension benefits. This is the statutory threshold for small pensions.
If you choose a lump-sum withdrawal, you can no longer opt for a higher pension at the start followed by a lower pension later (high/low pension option).
If you retire before January 1, 2029, you will not yet be able to choose a lump-sum withdrawal.
More information about this option will be available during 2028. The option then will also be incorporated into the Pension Planner on My Pension.
A lump-sum withdrawal can have consequences
Receiving extra money all at once may be attractive. For example, you could use it for home improvements, making additional mortgage repayments, or taking a trip.
However, this choice can affect your income, taxes, or government benefits. For example, you may have to pay more tax, or your benefits and allowances could be reduced. Therefore, it is important to think carefully about this option and, if necessary, seek advice from a financial adviser.
Choices already available when you retire
There are already several options available that allow you to tailor your pension to your personal situation. For example, you can decide when your pension starts. Under the collective labour agreement (CLA), your pension normally starts when you reach your State Pension Age (AOW age). However, you can choose to retire earlier, from the age of 58. If you are considering early retirement, please contact us.
You can also choose to:
exchange all or part of your accrued partner’s pension for a higher retirement pension, or
exchange part of your retirement pension for a higher partner’s pension.
These options allow you to shape your pension so that it best suits your needs and circumstances. Read more about these choices on our website.
