Living together (cohabitation)

If you live together or share a household with another adult, that person may be recognised as your partner. If you die, your partner may then be entitled to a partner’s pension.
There is no right to a partner’s pension if the person is your parent, child, grandparent, grandchild, adult stepchild or adult former foster child.

You have a shared household if:

  • you have a cohabitation agreement signed by a notary; or

  • you live together and can show that you share the same address and care for each other.

What is arranged for you?

If you die, your partner may receive a partner’s pension. If you die after you retire, your partner may also receive a partner’s pension. Your partner will receive this pension every month for the rest of their life.

You can also choose to build up an additional voluntary partner’s pension. You must sign up for this arrangement yourself. Read more about the voluntary additional partner’s pension.

What do you need to do?

You must register your partner with us yourself. You can do this in one of the following ways:

  1. Complete the Partner’s Pension Registration Form; or

  2. Send us a copy of the document that shows you have a shared household.
