What is pension
Pension is the income you receive when you stop working at a certain age. In addition to your income for later in life, there is also a partner’s pension for your partner and an orphan’s pension for your children if you pass away. And if you become disabled for work, your pension accrual will continue (partially).
Retirement is not only about the future
Besides providing income later in life, pension is already relevant today. If you pass away, a partner’s pension may be available for your partner and children. And if you become disabled for work, the payment of pension contributions may continue (partially).
That is why it is important to think about your pension when you move in with a partner or start a new job. It is also useful to understand what situations such as disability, divorce, a new job or death could mean for your pension and for your dependants.
Pension in the Netherlands
When you stop working and retire, your retirement income can consist of three different parts:
State pension (AOW): provided by the government
The AOW is the statutory state pension provided by the Dutch government. Everyone who lives in the Netherlands or pays Dutch payroll tax builds up entitlement to AOW. The amount of AOW you receive can vary. If you have lived in the Netherlands your entire life, you will generally receive a full AOW pension. If you have spent certain periods living abroad, your AOW entitlement may be lower.
You can find the age at which you will receive AOW on the Social Insurance Bank (SVB) website in the future.
Please note: if you have not always lived or worked in the Netherlands, your state pension may be lower. |
The pension you accrue from employment
This pension is anaddition to your AOW, arranged through your employer with the Heineken Pension Fund and possibly with a previous pension provider.
Pension is an employment benefit. As an employee, you and HEINEKEN both contribute to your pension through pension premiums. This pension is paid on top of your AOW state pension. You can read more about our pension plan here. How much pension you build up in the pension plan run by HEINEKEN is explained in your Uniform Pension Statement (UPO). This is sent to you every year. Would you like to have an overview of the pensions you have accrued by us and other employers? Go to www.mijnpensioenoverzicht.nl (use your DigiD to log in).
Pension savings that you arrange yourself
You can choose to arrange additional retirement savings on top of your AOW and the pension you build up through your employer. There are different ways to supplement your retirement income, for example through tax-efficient savings products, investments or insurance policies.
Whether you need this depends on your personal and financial situation. A financial adviser can help you make the right choices. You can also visit the Nibud website for more information about managing financially after retirement.
